4 min read

Private bio/pharma funding activity rose sharply in Q3 2026 after a difficult first half. BiopharmIQ recorded approximately $15.33B across 365 funding events covering 349 companies. Both event counts and funding amounts exceeded Q2 2026 and Q3 2024 and 2025.

Early-stage funding also improved from Q3 2025, although amounts remained below Q3 2024. Large debt and refinancing transactions contributed significantly to the overall funding total.

Please note: In this report, funding volumes reflect disclosed amounts only. Event counts include both financings with disclosed amounts and those for which the amount was not disclosed.

Quarterly Private Funding Activity

Q3 2026 recorded 365 private funding events, the second-highest quarterly total since January 2024, behind Q2 2024’s 381 events.

  • Up 139% from Q2 2026, which recorded 153 events, and 71% from Q1’s 213.

  • Up 59% from Q3 2025, which recorded 229 events.

  • Up 14% from Q3 2024, which recorded 319 events.

After quarterly counts stayed below 2024 levels throughout 2025 and weakened further in early 2026, Q3 marked a substantial recovery in activity.

Grants reached 77 events, the highest quarterly count in the series, compared with 22 in Q2 2026 and 50 in Q3 2025. Non-grant events also increased to 288, from 131 in Q2 and 179 in Q3 2025.

Within the quarter, July recorded 120 events, August 111, and September 134, including 36 grants.

Monthly Private Funding Amounts

All three months of Q3 2026 recorded more funding events and higher disclosed funding amounts than the corresponding months of 2025 (Fig. 2).

  • July recorded 120 events and $3.17B, compared with 70 events and approximately $2.08B in July 2025. Event counts increased around 71%, while funding volume rose 52%.

  • August recorded 111 events and $7.73B, compared with 64 events and approximately $3.9B in August 2025. Event counts increased around 73%, while funding volume nearly doubled.

  • September recorded 134 events and $4.43B, compared with 95 events and approximately $2.9B in September 2025. Event counts increased around 41%, while funding volume rose 53%.

The peaks in activity and funding amounts occurred in different months. August contributed approximately half of Q3 funding, recording the highest monthly amount in the January 2024–September 2026 series. September led by event count, including 36 grants, compared with 22 grants in July and 19 in August.

From August to September, event counts increased approximately 21%, while disclosed funding volume declined 43%.

Early-Stage Funding

Early-stage funding totaled approximately $2.21B across 119 Angel, Pre-Seed, Seed, and Series A events (Fig. 3).

  • July recorded 40 events and $269.6M.

  • August recorded 29 events and $553.9M.

  • September recorded 50 events and $1.39B.

Series A accounted for approximately $1.69B, followed by Seed at $442.1M, Angel at $46.2M and Pre-Seed at $36.1M.

September contributed approximately 63% of the quarter’s early-stage funding. Series A rounds represented approximately 76% of the total, showing that funding remained concentrated toward the later end of the early-stage categories.

Q3 2026 early-stage funding increased from 70 events and approximately $1.68B in Q3 2025 to 119 events and $2.21B, an increase of 70% in events and 32% in funding amounts. Against Q3 2024, event counts were approximately 12% higher, but funding remained around 29% below the $3.10B recorded across 106 events.

Public Market Sentiment

Public biotech market performance was uneven during Q3 2026. From July 1 to September 30, IBB recorded a stronger gain than XBI.

  • XBI increased from $156.55 to $157.68, a closing-price gain of approximately 0.7%.

  • IBB increased from $190.12 to $210.53, a closing-price gain of approximately 10.7%.

Both ETFs weakened in July before rebounding in August. From July 1 to July 31, XBI declined approximately 6.1% and IBB 2.0%. August gains were approximately 10.5% for XBI and 12.1% for IBB, measured from the July month-end close.

September performance diverged. XBI declined approximately 3.0% from its August month-end close, while IBB gained approximately 0.7%. IBB therefore retained its August recovery, while XBI finished close to its July 1 level.

The private funding rebound coincided with stronger performance in IBB, while XBI held only a small net gain. This points to an uneven public-market backdrop for the quarter’s higher private funding activity.

Concluding Remarks

Q3 marked a substantial increase in private bio/pharma funding activity after the weaker first half of 2026. Event counts exceeded the comparable quarters of both prior years, while early-stage funding improved from 2025.

The recovery remains uneven. Large refinancing transactions influenced overall funding volume, and early-stage funding remained below Q3 2024 levels. Public-market performance also diverged: IBB gained approximately 10.7% from July 1 to September 30, while XBI finished only 0.7% higher.

Q4 will show whether the higher private funding activity can continue and whether early-stage funding amounts recover further.
