Double Helix Law 11th Anniversary: 11 Years of Better Life Sciences IP Outcomes by Disrupting the Old Model

This year marks our 11th anniversary at Double Helix Law. Over the past 11 years, we have built Double Helix Law around a simple belief: life sciences companies need more than a traditional law firm. They need a highly engaged strategic IP partner that works like a fractional intellectual property department, deeply integrated with both the science and the business.

Our experience, both inside traditional firms and leading in-house patent functions, taught us that the traditional law firm model is often too reactive, too inefficient, and too disconnected from the real-world needs of innovative life sciences companies. We built Double Helix Law to operate differently.

We take a highly active approach to IP strategy, proactively building portfolios, identifying competitive risks early, aligning IP with business and R&D objectives, and working closely with our clients over the long term. Because we operate as a fully remote firm with lower overhead, we are able to give our clients and their IP the time and detailed attention required for today's complex, fast-evolving innovations and stricter patent law standards. This also allows us to invest more deeply in our own DHL customized AI tools and consistent training of our highly qualified team.

We have helped our clients secure valuable patents in difficult biotechnology areas, overcome challenging freedom-to-operate situations, complete financings and acquisitions, and build meaningful long-term IP positions. In one example, we helped a life sciences device company win a European opposition and secure 5 U.S. patents in a key patent family in less than 3 years, ultimately supporting a successful acquisition by a major healthcare company. In another recent life sciences device example, we secured a valuable U.S. patent allowance within months of taking over their portfolio, after their prior patent firm failed to make progress at the USPTO. Our successful results have helped us become a trusted diligence partner for investors, acquirers, and companies evaluating complex life sciences IP and freedom-to-operate issues.

Most importantly, we are grateful to the clients, colleagues, and professional relationships that have trusted us over the past 11 years. Their trust and collaboration have helped shape the firm we are today.

As the life sciences industry continues to evolve, we believe the need for proactive, business-aligned IP strategy will only continue to grow. We are excited to continue building on our strong foundation in the years ahead.
